ENGAGING/NOT ENGAGING TECHNOLOGIES

There is a vast variety of technologies that could incorporated into the environment of adult learners. Careful consideration must be given to which technologies might be engaging and which ones may not be so engaging. I have chosen to investigate one of each with Video Tutorials being intriguing and Search Engines being uninteresting.

VIDEO TUTORIALS “allow a classroom setting to come to life, offering different perspectives and tools that students might not normally be able to take advantage of in their learning” (Windermere, n.d., para. 1). This technology offers recorded online lessons with specific learning goals. It may be “viewed on computers through either DVDs or online streams, as well as mobile devices” (Windermere, n.d., para. 2). I found video tutorials to be engaging as they provide opportunities to learn by doing. They may contain examples, experiences, and applications. Furthermore, their visual and audio components are more captivating than lectures and reading material. Importantly, it can be viewed at the learner’s own pace and convenience. As an educator, I would implement video tutorials to assist students with development and application of skills. I would also use this technology as a resource for additional learning opportunities. Below is a link with more information on Video Tutorials.

SEARCH ENGINE “is a software program that searches for sites based on the words that you designate as search terms. Search engines look through their own databases of information in order to find what it is that you are looking for” (Boswell, 2016, para. 2). I suspect search engines may not be viewed as engaging as they are often associated with research. They contain large amounts of resources and information for learners to sift and search through, which can be time consuming. Effective use of search engines requires knowing where to look and how to apply best practices for the searches. Search engines may not be a very appealing technology. Yet, they are useful and has an important place in learning. As an educator, I would utilize search engines for their intended purposes, which is to locate information. However, I would allow for search of content that interests learners via engines of their choice and familiarity.

WEBINARS & VIRTUAL REALITY... Benefits and Implementations

WEBINAR “is a seminar on the web – any meeting, conference, recording, demonstration, training, or event that is designed to disseminate information either one-way or interactively” (ReadyTalk, nd, p. 1). Webinars can be used for training, marketing, workshops, and much more as they are conducted in real time or as pre-recorded material, which makes them flexible tools. As a future educator, I could incorporate webinars as a meet and greet strategy to break the ice and to address any existing or pre-conceived concerns regarding the course. This technology may also be used to promote participation by soliciting ideas for the delivery of course material. This can help customize technology to learning, which increases interests and actual learning (Laureate Education, 2013c). Below is a link with more information on webinars and their benefits.

VIRTUAL REALITY “is the creation of a virtual environment presented to our senses in such a way that we experience it as if we were really there” (Virtual Reality Society, 2017). Virtual reality is engaging and stimulating. Participants experience learning and can practice skills. As a future educator, I would incorporate virtual reality into the learning environment to promote decision-making and creative thinking. We learn as we interact with the world around us. Likewise, the interaction provided through virtual reality fosters learning. Learning results from rich stimuli, which generates knowledge and challenges (Burns, 2013). Virtual reality is a type of gaming, and I observe individuals of all ages engaged in gaming at any given moment. This leads me to believe that learners are interested in and open to gaming in learning environments. Below is a link with additional information on virtual reality and its uses.

EDUCATIONAL TECHNOLOGIES

Technology has become vital in societies around the world. It is ever-growing and here to stay. It is hard to imagine life without technology as it conveniently provides instant communications, loads of information, and a variety of ways to manage and conduct business. Technology evolves as it aims to improve quality of life, enhance learning, and provide entertainment. I will be looking into how WEBINARS and VIRTUAL REALITY may be used as educational tools for learning.

WEBINARS
- Seminars conducted on the internet
- May be live or pre-recorded
- Convenient as they are provide information which may be archived
- Time and cost efficient by cutting travel and meeting/conference arrangements

VIRTUAL REALITY
- Interactive simulator creating sense of reality
- Promotes engagement
- Provides active learning and exploration
- Offers skills practice without risks
