Mobile learning (mLearning) involves the use of connected mobile devices as learning tools. "It enables, empowers, and engages learning in ways that transform the learning environment for students inside and outside of school" (West, 2013, para. 3). Mobile learning occurs with and without the instructions of educators as individuals access information, download applications, and communicate with others each day. This blog explores how smartphones and tables are used in mobile learning.

SMARTPHONES basically have the same capabilities as any computer and are used on a daily basis for a variety of tasks. Most learners, if not all of them, have access to a smartphone. This makes it a convenient educational instrument. "One of the most significant mLearning benefits is that lot of the learning takes place while commuting. And for this, smartphones are the easiest and the most prompt to access" (Kaintura, 2016, para. 1).
The capabilities of smartphones allow learners to download applications that promote academic learning. Prompt communication can take place as well. Furthermore, applications used on smartphones may be utilized by other devices, which provides options for learning. A benefit of this interchangeability is that learning can continue without disruption if issues occur with one's smartphone. As a future educator, I would incorporate smartphones as a way to provide educational applications for skills-building. I would also send out course material as email attachments for students to view. The URL below provides additional information on benefits of smartphones in mobile learning.

TABLETS are just as efficient and effective as smartphones as they conveniently function in everyday life. This device is a natural fit in learning environments. It is more engaging than traditional educational methods as it offers touch screens and interactive applications and software. "Today’s learners prefer multimedia -videos, podcasts, audio- to keep them engaged in a learning environment" (Jenkins, 2016, para. 6). Tablets allow learners to quickly access information and to communicate with instructors and classmates with ease.
With its flexibility and many functions, tablets can bridge home, academics, and careers. As a future educator, I would take advantage of the communication capabilities and send links to learners to provide learning opportunities outside of the classroom. Additionally, I would encourage learning in a real-world context by asking learners to use their personal interests and experiences to create videos and collaborations. The URL below provides more information on benefits of mobile devices in the classroom.

Hello Ms. Thompson, I agree that having access to smartphones could enhance education. “Besides making phone calls, nearly all smartphones today can natively provide directions through GPS, take pictures, play music and keep track of appointments and contacts. Through the installation of apps, the list of possible smartphone uses multiplies by tens of thousands and grows longer every day.” (Jung, 2012) Smartphones make life a tad bit easier for many people because they have the capability to do and remember a number of things. Great post and continued success.

Vankita,
ReplyDeleteI think that both technologies you presented smartphones and IPads are excellent technologies to incorporate into the classroom. I think that both technologies are good for students on the go and they can read their course material on either technology if they are riding the train or the bus to work or school. So it makes us of time that would have otherwise been wasted on commuting. I would make sure that all the links and websites I provide in my classroom would be available on those technology formats. Also, the students could use the recording function and record the classroom for use later or take notes on these devices while in class. These are how I would incorporate both technologies into my classroom.
Hello Vankita,
ReplyDeleteI agree that smartphones are great for mobile learning. I have several applications on my smartphone, including academic and professional tools which I use frequently for mobile learning. As you point out, these applicants allow for learning to take place almost anywhere. As you point out, smartphones are akin to computers anymore, which allows for a broad range of tools and resources to be accessed on the go.
Best,
George
Vankita, this week’s choice of smartphones and tablets was excellent. Smartphones have taken over the tech world by storm, just about everyone you see has a smartphone including little children. Smartphones are perfect for work, school, and for internet use. Tablets are a great way to access the internet; it is lightweight, and they are an excellent way to entertain children. I have an iPad, and I take it everywhere I go just in case an important email comes through or for school usage (Kukulska-Holme, 2012).

ReplyDeleteHello Rochelle.
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing and adding helpful information. Web-learning, mobile-learning, and applications promote self-learning in addition to their contributions to academic learning. Rather than simply being directed by instructors/facilitators, individuals can seek knowledge for themselves to improve in areas that are challenging for them or to research in areas of interest.
